History
In the 1990s John was invited to give an after-dinner talk to an audience made up of healthcare professionals on the subject of behavioural science in relation to patients. Pharmaceutical company representatives watched in amazement as John transformed a large group of tired and weary delegates into fun loving fellows laughing away their usual reserve. Knowing a winner when they saw one, the reps were quick to ask him for his card and invitations to speak on the main platform at conferences soon followed.
John's work as a patient behaviour consultant over the last 15 years has put him at the forefront of collating best practices in patient relations in the UK and throughout Europe. Integral to his on-going research, he annually interviews hundreds of practitioners, engages in action research, and analyses the factors that drive or impede patient co-operation and responsiveness for high-level clients.
John’s dedication and growing expertise have led him to conduct primary research into patient behaviour such as smoking cessation, non-compliance, and clinic attendance failure. Bell helps medical professionals peel back the layers of individual behaviour to discover effective strategies for engaging patients in prevention and treatment. And, for the practitioner, John reveals how modifications to their language, behaviour and style of response can significantly enhance patient-practitioner interaction. For instance, his research and work on smoking cessation revealed how medical practitioners can unwittingly undermine patient resolve or collude with addictive thinking.
His prominence in this field has been recognised and rewarded by invitations to participate in corporate and public sector initiatives. By way of example he was invited by GlaxoSmithKline to sit on a steering group looking at patient expectations in relation to asthma. John was involved in news-breaking research into the attitudes of asthma sufferers. The results of the 1000 strong survey, indicated that asthma sufferers were missing out on proper treatment because they thought there was no point in going to their doctor. Published in the International Journal of Clinical Practice ( 4.3.2002).
John’s consultancy work regularly takes him into the primary care sector working within medical practices, to foster and develop integrated healthcare teams.
In more recent years, John has emerged as a rising star of conference and symposia platforms. Medical conference organisers TTA International voted John ‘Best UK Healthcare Conference Speaker of the Year’ and in a relatively short time he has gained an impressive portfolio of speaking engagements.
As a Master of Education his presentation methods are based on sound, person-centered learning. His continuing success relies on his reputation, which is linked to the outstanding, positive feedback companies constantly receive from their delegates.
